The suspension of Jimmy Kimmel felt like the final nail in the coffin of free speech in the U.S. I spoke with Ian Rosenberg, media lawyer & author, to ask him what happened and how we can fight back.
Over on the right (at The Free Press) over half of the commenters are saying Kimmel was let go for being incompetent and it’s nothing to do with Trump or Carr or free speech. 😔
They will do anything to keep themselves from seeing the truth of this presidency. One day, I hope we all, as a nation, wake up from this fascist fever dream. But by then, I fear, it will be too late. And rebuilding a democracy, after so many shattered norms, will be hard.
Presumably these are the same people who make fun of the handicapped, the mentally ill, the poor, and anyone who looks or sounds different from them. Also the people who called the Jan. 6 rioters tourists and/or patriots. So clearly, they have different standards.
Oh, I am so sick about this. I wrote a note about it yesterday. To sum up: I've been watching Kimmel stick it to Trump for months, his unspoken message being, "I dare you to stop me, you oversized orange monster-baby." And I'd cheer him on, but I was worried all the same. Today I keep thinking of Helen Sperling, the Holocaust survivor in New Hartford who made it her life's work to tell everyone her story, her mission being "Never again." She believed that if she spread the word, people would understand history and never let a crazed dictator destroy another (supposedly) advanced civilization. I imagine she's rolling in her grave right now, asking, "Did they hear nothing I said?" https://substack.com/@debbywaldman/note/c-157382055
Thank you for focusing on this issue. I feel like I'm living in the Twilight Zone. I can't believe what is happening on every level!
It’s insane. And I couldn’t not speak up today of all days.

Yep, the same ones.
Excellent conversation, thank you for the clarification.
I needed to understand if I was overreacting or not and why, from a legal/constitutional standpoint. Thank you.
