She spent years, as an editor at Glamour, teaching women how to dress. Then, in middle age, Suze Yalof Schwartz discovered meditation. And it completely changed her life. (And then, eventually, mine.)
Should I try another app to meditate? I love the concept of you can't stop the wind but will it calm my constantly churning mind? I have tried dozens of meditations in the past 30 years starting with the mindfulness of Jon Kabat Zinn and the crap continues to keep me in a stressful place. Do I try one more?
Thanks for this article. This time of our lives seems to be the pruning stage: we decide what to worry about and when we can say “not my monkey, not my circus;” where to put our efforts, and who we love and how.
It’s also fitting that the Can’t Fight The Wind pathway starts with breath. I too use box breathing—it makes back pain vanish for as long as I’m doing it, and I emerge restored every time.
You can’t fight wind, I’m going to use that, thank you.
Also worth mentioning, there are many other very useful meditation apps. For me it’s 10 minutes of The Daily Calm. (Not necessarily transformative, but definitely helpful.)
My sister gave me Be Here Now when I was in high school (1970's, for context) and it has been a cornerstone concept for me ever since. Enjoying the moment, being present, watching life flow. And when things are bad, knowing that there will be change. And that when things are good - to enjoy them because there will be change!
Unplug was a balm for me when I was living in Santa Monica, trying to quit drinking and learning healthy ways to deal with life/stress (that didn’t involve drinking). I was even working at Headspace at the time. But it was the breathwork sessions and the amazing teachers therein, that had such a profound impact on me. Will never forget those times. Life changing. ❤️🙏✨
This was a great piece!
I’ve yet to get anything out of meditation but since my life is not what I want it to be, maybe I should try again.
